Default Grameen Bank. - General write up

1. What values and attitudes has Grameen Bank tried to communicate with the rest of the world?

Grameen Bank is trying to communicate to rest of the world, that banks should not only focus on the making profit but also should be more socially responsible. Grameen bank mission is to overcome poverty by helping the poor people, and they believe that bank should go to the people rather than people coming to them for loan. The interest rates of the Grameen bank are lesser than the other banks this is because they are mainly focused on the poor.
Grameen bank is more focused on creating self employment and mainly targets poor women to start up small house hold business. The bank also believes in order to sustain it should reach to the people rather than people coming to them. They also want to show that they care for society. Grameen bank also gives high priority on building social capital.
The attitude of the Grameen bank is that to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the rural poor. Grameen Bank also believes that development is a long term process which depends on the aspirations and commitment of the economic operators. They also make sure that the credit serves the poor and not vice-versa. Grameen Bank miracle is that using micro-loans as a social stimulus to effect needed changes in personal behavior and cultural values. Grameen Bank’s project has been processed based on trust and not much on legal agreement. The objective is to bring the disadvantaged people within a framework of some organizational format which they can understand and operate and can find socio-political and economic strength through mutual support, and also to reverse the age old vicious circle, “low income, low savings, low investment into an expanding system of low income, credits, investment, more income, more credit, more investment, more income.

How did
Quote:
Mohammad Yunus
manage to persuade the government and people into his idea of micro financing?

Grameen Bank is an example of breaking a vicious circle which, if extended to more fields, would go a long way in eliminating poverty and misery from the world. To Grameen Bank credit is a powerful weapon. The founder of the bank Mohammad Yunus believes that the more credit one receives the more power he can command.
Micro-finance refers to the provision of financial services to low-income clients, including the self-employed. The term also refers to the practice of sustainably delivering those services. More broadly, it refers to a movement that envisions a world in which as many as many poor and near-poor households as possible have permanent access to an appropriate range of high quality financial services, including not just credit but also saving. The role of micro-credit as a powerful tool for poverty reduction is now widely established and recognized. Before persuading the government Mohammad Yunus very smartly convinced general public about its success. Majority of the borrowers of the Grameen Bank was women and they were also owners of it. Grameen loan’s focus was always on lower interest rates and availability to all poor. This method really appealed to the poor who refused loan by the bank in the absence of any security.
The idea of the micro financing was appreciated in terms of investing the money to the poor people and non-compromised goal of reaching poor. It is not based on any collateral or legal enforceable contracts. It is also based on trust not on legal procedures and system. In order to obtain loan the borrower must join a group of borrowers. The bank feels that by joining this group makes them responsible. Generally these loans are given through non-profit organizations or through institutions owned primarily by the borrowers. This will help to keep the interest to keep low than the market interest rates.
Grameen bank involves people in partnership, this approach help Grameen bank to maintain its credits. More over the transparency and free from corruption helped for the huge success of this method of financing.

Discuss examples of global corporation that wave destroyed or harmed issues of sustainability, what leadership and management changes practice will you advice shell to adopt to be more proactive.
There are numerous examples of global corporations that wave destroyed or harmed issues of sustainability. In this journal I am going to discuss about three such global corporations that have harmed sustainability.

1. In Indonesia, damage to the environment caused by PT Freeport a US gold mining company has reached a serious level. The company has caused severe environmental damage and breaches of law. Grasberg mine is the largest gold mine in the world. It is located in the province of Papua in Indonesia.
Freeport-Rio Tinto has failed to comply with government orders to amend its dangerous waste management practices despite years of official findings that the company is in breach of environmental regulations. The law is not enforced by the ministry of Environment due to the joint venture’s pervasive financial and political influence. This damage to the environment has caused many effects. For example discharging of one billion tons of tailing into the Aghawagon-Otomona-Ajkwa river system has affected the quality of water and marine life in the river.
2. In India Bhopal toxic gas leakage incident. This was an industrial disaster that occurred in Bhopal, resulting in the death of more than 30,000 people. The incident took place in the early morning of December 3, 1984 in the city of Bhopal in the state of Madhya Pradesh. This is an union carbide subsidiary pesticide plant released 40 tones of Methyl Isocyanate gas. This disaster is cited as one of the world’s worst industrial disasters.
3. Coca cola company at Palchimada in Kerala a southern state in India. The company, in violation of laws, has been extracting 8 lak liters of water to 15 lak liters of water per day. The company has been dumping the sludge and slurry on lands of unsuspecting farmers promoting their use as fertilizers. The consequence of the company’s blatant use, misuse and violations of existing laws along with the connivance of the concerned departments of the governments have led to the depletion and degradation of natural resources like groundwater and land in the vicinity.
