Stock market benchmark indices ended with modest gains on Monday as market eyed Reserve Bank of India’s credit policy review on Tuesday. Midcap and smallcaps outperformed the benchmarks following good quarterly results.
Buying was seen in oil & gas and capital goods while metals and power dragged. Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 14,336.25, up 61.31 points or 0.43 per cent. It touched a high of 14,421.61 and low of 14,219.38. National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 4330, up 18.15 points or 0.42 per cent. The broader index touched a high of 4,352.65 and low of 4,282.25. BSE Midcap Index closed at 5,632.21, up 1.07 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index ended 2.01 per cent up at 6,915.27. Biggest Sensex gainers were Larsen & Toubro (3.9%), Tata Power (3.6%), ACC (3.27%), ONGC (2.93%), Ranbaxy Laboratories (2.07%) and Reliance Communications (1.87%). Losers comprised Sterlite Industries (-3.25%), Hindalco Industries (-2.44%), Tata Steel (-2.33%), State Bank of India (-2.13%), Mahindra & Mahindra (-1.9%) and Grasim Industries (-1.79%). Market breadth on BSE showed 1767 advances and 850 declines.
